Glass Blenders, Immersion Blenders & Glass Food Choppers

Blender with a green smoothie, a stainless immersion blender, a pot of soup and a small chopper of diced vegetables

Hot soup in a plastic blender jar always bothered me, and our old jar was scratched and cloudy. These are the glass-jar blenders, stainless immersion blenders and glass-bowl choppers I'd point a friend to.

Most blender jars today are Tritan or other plastic. They're light and shatter-resistant, and Tritan is marketed as BPA-free, but the jars still scratch and cloud with time. If you blend hot food, make baby food, or simply prefer glass, here are good options.

No blender is plastic-free. Even glass-jar blenders have a plastic lid and a plastic or silicone part in the blade base. The goal is to reduce the plastic your food touches, especially when it's hot.

Why we picked these
  1. Oster Pro 1200 Blender with Glass Jar Glass jar blender A powerful countertop blender with a 6-cup glass jar, a good pick if you'd like smoothies and hot soups to touch glass rather than a plastic pitcher. Worth knowing: The lid and blade base gasket are plastic or silicone, as on all glass-jar blenders.
  2. Oster Classic Series Blender with Glass Jar Simple glass blender A no-frills 8-speed blender with a 6-cup glass jar, affordable and widely available. Worth knowing: Plastic lid and blade base.
  3. Hamilton Beach Power Elite Blender with Glass Jar Budget glass blender An inexpensive multi-function blender with a 40-oz glass jar, fine for smoothies, sauces and baby food. Worth knowing: Plastic lid and blade base.
  4. Vitamix 48 oz Stainless Steel Container Stainless Vitamix jar A stainless steel container for compatible Vitamix machines, an option if you already own a Vitamix and want to skip the standard plastic jar. Worth knowing: The lid is Tritan plastic. Check machine compatibility before buying.

Glass jars are heavier and can break if dropped. Let very hot soup cool a little, fill the jar no more than halfway, and vent the lid.

Why we picked these
  1. KitchenAid Variable Speed Corded Hand Blender (KHBV53) Immersion blender A corded hand blender with a removable 8-inch blending arm. Blend soup right in the pot instead of pouring hot soup into a plastic jar. Worth knowing: The included blending jar is plastic; blend in a glass jar or the pot instead.
  2. Braun MultiQuick 7 Hand Blender Immersion with steel shaft A well-regarded immersion blender with a stainless blending shaft and good speed control. Worth knowing: Some included accessories (beaker, chopper bowl) are plastic, so use your own glass jar or pot.
  3. Cuisinart Smart Stick Stainless Hand Blender (CSB-179) Stainless body A stainless-housed immersion blender with a stainless shaft for soups, sauces and purées. Worth knowing: The included mixing cup is plastic; blend in a glass jar or pot instead.
  4. Mueller Ultra-Stick Immersion Hand Blender Budget immersion An affordable immersion blender with a stainless steel shaft, a cheap way to purée soups and baby food in a glass bowl or pot. Worth knowing: Accessories vary by bundle; check which parts are plastic.

An immersion blender is my favorite way to purée soup, because it blends right in the pot and the hot soup never goes into a jar. Most come with a plastic beaker; use a glass jar or measuring cup instead.
