Best Air Purifiers for the Nursery & Family Home

Cooking smoke, dust, pet dander, wildfire season: there are lots of reasons parents look at air purifiers. Here's how I'd choose one for a nursery or family room without overspending.
Indoor air can contain fine particles from cooking, dust and smoke. The EPA notes that portable air cleaners with HEPA filters can reduce airborne particles in a room. They aren't magic, and they're not a substitute for ventilation (open a window, run your range hood), but a good one is a nice tool, especially during wildfire smoke days.
What actually matters
- True HEPA filter. "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" is not the same thing.
- CADR and room size. Clean Air Delivery Rate tells you how much filtered air it moves. The EPA's rule of thumb: for smoke, CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's square footage. Size up rather than down so you can run it on a quieter setting.
- Noise on low and sleep mode. For a nursery, a quiet sleep mode and a light you can turn off are big.
- Carbon filter for smells (cooking, diapers).
- Filter cost. Replacement filters are the ongoing cost. Check the price before you choose a model.
Skip ozone generators
Avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone, sometimes sold as "air purifiers" or "ionizers" for odor. Both the EPA and California's Air Resources Board warn that ozone is a lung irritant. Some HEPA purifiers include an optional ionizer feature; most let you switch it off, and I'd run a nursery purifier HEPA-only. California certifies air cleaners for low ozone emissions; you can look up models on CARB's list.

- Keep it a few feet from the crib, with the cord out of reach and secured.
- Don't put it where a climbing toddler can use it as a step.
- Leave space around the intake and outlet so airflow isn't blocked.
- Many parents like the gentle hum as white noise.
Cleaning with fewer fragranced sprays also helps the air at home. See our non-toxic cleaning tools and supplies guide.
