Lead-Free Dinnerware & Drinking Glasses: Simple, Safe Picks

After reading about lead in some vintage and imported dishes, I wanted everyday plates and glasses I didn't have to think about. The simplest answer turned out to be plain: undecorated white porcelain, tempered glass plates and clear glasses.
Lead in dishes usually comes from glazes and decorations, not the clay or glass underneath. The highest risk is with vintage dishware, some handmade or imported ceramics, and painted designs on the outside of glasses, especially the rim. Plain, modern, undecorated pieces are generally the lowest risk.
I can't test the products below for lead, and "lead-free" in a listing isn't the same as lab testing. If you want certainty, look for brands that publish independent test results, or use a home lead test kit on the dishes you already have.
What to look for
- Tempered soda-lime glass plates and bowls (like Duralex and Corelle Vitrelle) have no glaze.
- Plain white porcelain with no painted designs or metallic trim.
- Clear drinking glasses with no painted logos or colored rims. Skip leaded crystal for everyday drinking.
- Retire chipped or crazed pieces (fine cracks in the glaze), and old dishes with worn or chalky glaze.
