Low-Tox Kitchen Swaps Under $50 (That Actually Get Used)

You don't need a $700 cookware set to make your kitchen lower-tox. These are the small, budget-friendly swaps I made first, in roughly the order I'd do them again.
My rule of thumb for prioritizing: start where heat, fat or acid meets plastic, and with the things your family uses every single day. Room-temperature plastic storing dry crackers is low on my list. A plastic spatula in a hot pan, or plastic in the microwave, is high on it.
Each of these is typically under $50 at the time of writing, but prices change constantly, so check the current price on Amazon.

Mooues Teak Wooden Kitchen Utensil Set, 9 Pieces
Teak spoons, spatulas and turners that won't melt against a hot pan the way old plastic spatulas can. They're gentle on any cookware.
Worth knowing: Hand wash and dry, and oil occasionally like a cutting board.

Lodge Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet, 10.25 Inch
Plain cast iron seasoned with vegetable oil, made in the USA, and inexpensive enough that almost every family can start here. It gets more nonstick the more you use it and can last for generations.
Worth knowing: It's heavy, and the handle gets hot. Keep it away from little hands on the stove and use a handle cover.

Pyrex 4-Cup Glass Measuring Cup
A classic glass measuring cup that doubles as a microwave-safe mixing bowl for melting butter or warming leftovers. It's one of the most-used things in my kitchen.

4. Draining hot food

OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Colander, 5 Qt
Draining boiling pasta water through plastic is one of the easiest heat-plus-plastic moments to cut out. A stainless colander lasts forever.

Unbleached, chlorine-free parchment that makes any pan easy to clean and keeps acidic foods off uncoated aluminum.
Worth knowing: Parchment is coated with silicone to make it nonstick. That's typical; I'm comfortable with it at normal baking temperatures (check the box for the max temp).

Stainless Steel Ice Cube Trays with Lever, 2 Pack
Old-school metal ice trays with a release lever. Handy for freezing purées and broth cubes too.

9. Cleaning
Wettex Original Swedish Dishcloths, 10 Pack
Cellulose-and-cotton cloths that soak up spills like a sponge, dry quickly, and can be washed and reused for weeks. They replaced most of our paper towels.

Fragrance-free dishwasher tablets with packaging that's plastic-free, a nice swap from film-wrapped pods.
Check price on Amazon →Handy Laundry Wool Dryer Balls, 6-Pack
Wool balls bounce around the dryer to soften and reduce drying time, replacing scented dryer sheets. They last for hundreds of loads.

Plastic storage bins for dry pantry goods, the kids' plastic toy kitchen, and the salad spinner are all still here. Low-tox is about reducing the biggest exposures you can easily control, not chasing perfection. Swap things as they wear out, and don't throw out perfectly good items in a panic.
